Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed Linen Cotton Fabric in Espresso combines the natural texture of linen with the softness and versatility of cotton. Woven from black and brown yarns, the Espresso colourway has a subtle chambray effect that gives the fabric depth and tonal variation, creating a beautifully understated alternative to a solid-coloured plain.

The linen and cotton blend has the characteristically soft handle of Robert Kaufman’s Essex range, balanced with enough structure for garments where a little shape is wanted. At 190gsm, it is a versatile medium-weight cloth with a relaxed, slightly textured appearance that works particularly well for simple, contemporary silhouettes.

This fabric forms part of our curated collection of dressmaking fabrics available to buy online in the UK at The Draper’s Daughter.

Perfect for:

  • Relaxed trousers and skirts
  • Pinafores and simple dresses
  • Jackets and overshirts
  • Structured tops and layering pieces

This fabric works beautifully for patterns such as the The Assembly Line Almost Long Trousers or the Merchant & Mills Factory Dress, where its balance of softness, texture and gentle structure complements clean, wearable silhouettes.

Dressmaking fabric details:

  • Composition: 55% linen, 45% cotton
  • Width: 110cm
  • Weight: approximately 190gsm / 5.6oz
  • Construction: Yarn-dyed linen and cotton blend

The yarn-dyed construction means the colour is created by weaving together differently coloured threads rather than printing or dyeing the finished cloth. In Espresso, black and brown yarns combine to produce a subtle marl or chambray-like effect, giving the fabric considerably more depth than a conventional plain.

Sewing notes:

  • Medium-weight linen and cotton blend with a soft handle
  • Gently structured while remaining comfortable to wear
  • Also suitable for quilting and selected interiors projects

Care instructions: We recommend pre-washing before sewing. Machine wash on a gentle cycle and avoid tumble drying where possible to preserve the fabric's natural texture.

Buying guide • Sold by the half metre. For example, order a quantity of 2 for 1 metre.
