How to Choose Fabrics for Dressmaking

Choosing the right fabric can make all the difference to a sewing project. The same pattern can look and feel completely different depending on the fabric you choose, which is why fabric selection is just as important as the design itself.

Whether you’re a beginner or a more experienced maker, understanding a few key principles will help you choose fabrics with confidence and create garments you’ll genuinely enjoy wearing.

1. Start with the pattern requirements

Before choosing a fabric, always check the pattern envelope or product description for recommended fabric types. Designers suggest fabrics for a reason — they’ve tested the pattern to ensure the finished garment behaves as intended.

For example:

  • Lightweight cottons such as lawn or poplin are ideal for structured tops and dresses

  • Fluid fabrics like viscose or silk work best for garments that rely on drape and movement

Following these guidelines is one of the simplest ways to avoid disappointment.

2. Understand fabric weight and drape

Fabric weight and drape have a significant impact on the final silhouette of a garment.

  • Lightweight fabrics create softness and movement, making them ideal for floaty dresses and blouses

  • Medium to heavier weight fabrics provide structure, which works well for trousers, skirts, and jackets

When choosing fabric, think about how you want the garment to feel and move on the body, not just how the fabric looks on the bolt.

3. Consider fibre content

Fibre choice affects comfort, breathability, and how a garment wears over time.

Natural fibres such as cotton, linen, and silk are breathable, comfortable, and pleasant to sew with. They tend to age well and are a popular choice for everyday garments.

If sustainability is important to you, natural fibres are also biodegradable and often available in organic or responsibly produced options.

Blended fabrics can offer practical benefits, such as added strength or reduced creasing, but it’s worth understanding the balance of fibres and how they’ll perform in wear.

4. Think about colour and print longevity

Colour and print play a big role in how often a garment gets worn.

  • Bold prints can be striking and expressive

  • Muted tones and smaller-scale designs are often easier to wear day-to-day

A helpful question to ask is: Will this work with the rest of my wardrobe?
Fabrics that mix and match easily tend to become favourites over time.

5. Use swatches to choose with confidence

When shopping for fabric online, ordering a swatch is one of the best ways to make an informed decision. A swatch allows you to check:

  • Colour accuracy

  • Texture and weight

  • Drape and handle

It’s a small step that can save time, money, and uncertainty.

How we choose fabrics for the shop

At The Draper’s Daughter, fabrics are selected with garment-making in mind. We focus on natural fibres, thoughtful design, and cloth that feels good to work with and wear.

Many of the fabrics we stock are ones we’d happily choose for our own projects, and they’re selected to work seamlessly with the sewing patterns we carry. Our aim is to make choosing fabric feel calmer, more intuitive, and more enjoyable.
