Robert Kaufman Essex Yarn Dyed Homespun Linen Cotton Fabric in Charcoal combines the natural texture of linen with the softness of cotton in a more tactile, softly draping weave. Woven from mid-grey and warm cream yarns, the Charcoal colourway has a subtle chambray effect with gentle tonal variation, creating a beautifully understated neutral for a modern handmade wardrobe.

The Homespun collection is the same weight as Robert Kaufman’s classic Essex Linen, but its different weave construction creates a slightly ridged, more textural surface with a softer, more relaxed drape. At approximately 190gsm, it retains enough body for versatile dressmaking while offering a little more movement than the original Essex weave.

This fabric forms part of our curated collection of dressmaking fabrics available to buy online in the UK at The Draper’s Daughter.

Perfect for:

  • Relaxed trousers and skirts
  • Pinafores and simple dresses
  • Jackets and overshirts
  • Simple tops and layering pieces

This fabric works beautifully for patterns such as the The Assembly Line Almost Long Trousers or the Merchant & Mills Factory Dress, where its balance of softness, texture and gentle structure complements clean, wearable silhouettes.

Dressmaking fabric details:

  • Composition: 55% linen, 45% cotton
  • Width: 110cm
  • Weight: approximately 190gsm / 5.6oz
  • Construction: Yarn-dyed linen and cotton blend

The distinctive Homespun weave gives the fabric its gently ridged texture and more fluid drape. In Charcoal, mid-grey and cream yarns create a soft chambray-like appearance with subtle variation across the surface, adding depth and character without feeling overly rustic.

Sewing notes:

  • Medium-weight linen and cotton blend with a soft handle
  • Gently structured while remaining comfortable to wear
  • Also suitable for quilting and selected interiors projects

Care instructions: We recommend pre-washing before sewing. Machine wash on a gentle cycle and avoid tumble drying where possible to preserve the fabric's natural texture.
