5 Modern Sewing Patterns Inspired by Scandinavian Style
If you’re drawn to clean lines, thoughtful details and effortlessly wearable garments, Scandinavian fashion offers endless inspiration. Known for its balance of simplicity and subtle statement, this aesthetic translates beautifully into sewing patterns that feel modern, versatile and timeless.

In this post, I’m sharing five sewing patterns inspired by Scandinavian style, including designs from Swedish brands The Assembly Line and Birgitta Helmersson... all chosen for their clean silhouettes, wearable shapes and ability to work across seasons. Each pattern pairs beautifully with natural fabrics and is available to buy online in the UK.
1 - The Assembly Line Cuff Top Sewing Pattern
A true modern classic, the Cuff Top by The Assembly Line is one of those patterns that quietly earns its place in your wardrobe. With its clean, straight silhouette and distinctive elasticated cuffs, it perfectly captures that Scandinavian balance of minimalism and subtle detail.

This is an ideal pattern for everyday wear and works beautifully in cotton poplin, linen or lightweight denim. It’s also a great entry point if you’re new to The Assembly Line.
Pair with: structured cottons or linen for a crisp, modern finish such as the Cotton Plain Weaves.
2 - The Assembly Line High Waisted Wide Leg Trousers Sewing Pattern
Wide leg trousers are one of the key sewing trends for 2026, and the High Waisted Trousers by The Assembly Line are a perfect example of this modern silhouette.

Fitted neatly at the waist with soft volume through the leg, they offer a flattering and wearable shape that works across seasons. The clean lines and subtle tailoring details give them a polished feel, while still being comfortable enough for everyday wear.
Pair with: cotton twill, denim or linen for structure and shape, for example the Gabardine Light fabrics by Atelier Brunette.
3 - The Assembly Line Drop Waist Dress Sewing Pattern
The Drop Waist Dress is a beautifully simple yet striking design that reflects the Scandinavian approach to modern dressing. With its relaxed silhouette and softly gathered skirt, it feels both contemporary and easy to wear.

I made my version, pictured above, in one of the Nani Iro double gauze fabrics.
This is a versatile pattern that can be adapted depending on fabric choice — crisp cottons create a more structured look, while softer fabrics offer a more fluid finish.
Pair with: cotton poplin, double gauze, linen or lightweight denim
4 - The Assembly Line Billow Blouse Sewing Pattern
The Billow Blouse introduces soft volume into a modern wardrobe while still maintaining a clean, wearable silhouette. With its gathered neckline and gently structured shape, it’s a perfect example of how Scandinavian design balances simplicity with interest.

This style works beautifully in fabrics with drape, allowing the volume to fall naturally while still holding its shape.
Pair with: linen, tencel or soft cottons for a relaxed, fluid finish
5 - Birgitta Helmersson Zero Waste Block Pants PDF Sewing Pattern
The Zero Waste Block Pants by Birgitta Helmersson bring a thoughtful, contemporary approach to modern sewing. Designed using zero waste pattern cutting, this style combines sustainability with a clean, architectural silhouette.

I made my version using one of our mid-weight deadstock fabrics.
With their wide leg shape and relaxed fit, these trousers sit perfectly within a Scandinavian-inspired wardrobe — simple, functional and beautifully considered. The subtle design details and efficient cutting method make them as interesting to sew as they are to wear.
Pair with: light to mid-weight linen, cotton or wool for structure and everyday wearability.
Which pattern should you sew first?
If you’re new to this aesthetic, the Cuff Top is a great place to start thanks to its simplicity and versatility. For something more trend-led, the High Waisted Trousers offer a modern wide-leg silhouette, while the Billow Blouse is perfect if you’re looking to explore softer volume and shape.
