Birgitta Helmersson • Zero Waste Block Pants Sewing Pattern Review

Posted on August 22, 2025

If you're looking for a stylish, sustainable sewing project that’s beginner-friendly and rewarding to make, I highly recommend the Zero Waste Block Pants Sewing Pattern by Birgitta Helmersson. I recently finished sewing my first pair and I’m really pleased with how they turned out.

This was my first time trying a zero waste sewing pattern, and I found the process both interesting and inspiring. Instead of traditional printed pattern pieces, the layout is plotted directly onto the fabric, helping to minimise textile waste. I found this step surprisingly engaging — it gave me a deeper appreciation for garment construction and a greater connection to the finished piece.

Birgitta’s cutting instructions are clear, thoughtfully written, and supported by helpful illustrations, making the plotting process easy to follow. Once cut, the trousers come together quickly, with sewing instructions that are ideal for beginners. If you're new to sewing, this pattern is a great place to start.

What sets this pattern apart from other wide-leg, elasticated waist trouser patterns are the front pleats, which add a refined touch and elevate the overall design. These pleats give the trousers a semi-tailored look while maintaining all the comfort of a casual everyday pant.

I was especially impressed with the waistband construction — the inside is finished with bias binding, which adds a neat, professional touch. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in the final result.

Overall, I’m delighted with my Zero Waste Block Pants. They’re comfortable, flattering, and easy to wear, and I love the silhouette created by the pleats and wide legs. Best of all, they support a more sustainable approach to sewing — something I’m keen to prioritise in my makes. I’ll definitely be sewing another pair soon!
